Find out how fast you type in words per minute (WPM). Choose your test duration, click Start, and begin typing. Your speed and accuracy are tracked in real time.
The average typing speed for adults is 40 WPM (words per minute). Professional typists typically type at 65–75 WPM. Competitive typists and stenographers can exceed 120 WPM. For office work, 50–60 WPM is considered proficient. Regular practice using a typing speed test is the fastest way to improve.
WPM is calculated by dividing the total number of correctly typed characters by 5 (the standard word length), then dividing by the number of minutes elapsed. Accuracy is the percentage of correct keystrokes out of total keystrokes. The WordMetrics typing test measures both raw speed and accuracy simultaneously.
Focus on accuracy before speed — errors slow you down more than careful typing. Use all 10 fingers with proper home-row positioning. Practice daily for 10–15 minutes. Don't look at the keyboard. Use the medium and hard difficulty modes on this test to challenge yourself with longer, less common words.
